CBAM deadlines 2027

· 4 minutes

2027 is the first year in which CBAM costs real money: you buy certificates, hold them through the year and submit your first declaration. These are the dates, from the same reference data the CBAM Wise portal uses.

  1. · Certificate price becomes weekly

  2. · Q4 2026 certificate price expected

  3. · Certificate sales open

Buy the certificates for your 2026 imports on the Common Central Platform.

  4. · Holding check (Q1 2027)

Hold certificates for at least 50% of the embedded emissions of the CBAM goods you imported since 1 January.

  5. · Holding check (Q2 2027)

Hold certificates for at least 50% of the embedded emissions of the CBAM goods you imported since 1 January.

  6. · CBAM declaration for 2026 and surrender

Submit the CBAM declaration for your 2026 imports and surrender the certificates.

  7. · Holding check (Q3 2027)

Hold certificates for at least 50% of the embedded emissions of the CBAM goods you imported since 1 January.

  8. · Last day to request repurchase

Request the repurchase of certificates left over after the surrender, if you have any.

  9. · Holding check (Q4 2027)

Hold certificates for at least 50% of the embedded emissions of the CBAM goods you imported since 1 January.

What each step means

Certificate sales open (1 February 2027)

Certificates are sold on the Common Central Platform. Certificates for your 2026 imports are priced by the quarter the goods were imported in; the fourth quarter's price is published on 4 January 2027. From 2027 the price is set every week.

Quarterly holding checks

At the end of each quarter of 2027 you must hold certificates for at least 50% of the embedded emissions of the CBAM goods you imported since 1 January, after the free allocation adjustment. Plan your purchases so you are never short at a quarter end.

The CBAM declaration (30 September 2027)

By 30 September 2027 you submit the declaration for your 2026 imports and surrender the certificates it needs. You can correct a declaration after you have submitted it, within the period the rules allow.

Repurchase (31 October 2027)

Certificates left over after the surrender can be sold back, on request, until 31 October. Unused certificates for 2026 are cancelled on 1 July 2028.

What to do now

  • Make sure every 2026 import is uploaded, with its acceptance date.
  • Ask your main suppliers for verified 2026 data before the declaration.
  • Budget for the certificates, with the quarterly holding in mind.
